Basse-Terre Island

The west wing of the butterfly-shaped island is just a few feet away from Grande-Terre, yet so different. Separated from Grande-Terre by a narrow sea channel called la Rivière Salée, the Basse-Terre region is a cluster of hiking trails, verdant mountains, natural hot springs, fabulous rainforests, rivers and waterfalls. Much of the interior is protected within Guadeloupe National Park, a biosphere reserve with an extraordinary biodiversity, while the beaches around the island offer an incredible variety of sand colours depending on how close they are to the volcano. Basse-Terre is also widely marked by history and culture; it is home to archaeological sites such as Le Parc des Roches Gravées, Hindu temples and Catholic churches as well as military forts. It is definitely a true paradise for those who love the outdoors, trekking and canyoning.

You will meet up with your guide at the location of your choice (hotel, airport or cruise port) and begin with a discussion of which attractions you want to visit. Together, you can plan an itinerary that encompasses all of the must-see landmarks and highlights according to your group’s interests. Throughout the day, you’ll get personalized attention from your guide and enjoy the chance to ask plenty of questions.
